Transforming precision cancer care through user-centered design
Director of UX · 2021 — 2024
The Challenge
Legacy Systems Slowing Care
16 Forms
Lab technicians navigated 16 different paper requisition forms, with manual entry taking over an hour per case
13 Apps
Lab staff juggled an average of 13 applications across fragmented legacy systems, hindering productivity
60%
of orders placed digitally, falling short of the 70% corporate OKR target for digital channel adoption
The Solution
Clinical Platform Redesign
I led a 15-person UX team redesigning FMI's clinical platform ecosystem — from how labs accession tissue samples to how physicians order tests and patients access results. Using ethnographic research at clinical sites and laboratories, design sprints, and iterative user testing, we built both the products and the design practice from the ground up.
OCR-Powered Accessioning
Consolidated 13 legacy applications into a single platform with AI-driven OCR, eliminating manual data entry and reducing processing time by 34%.
Digital Ordering & EMR Integration
Redesigned test ordering across portal and EMR channels, created sales enablement playbooks, and drove digital adoption from 60% to 75%.
Genomic Report Redesign
Simplified clinical reports based on oncologist personas and user testing, enabling physicians to quickly interpret results and determine next steps in patient care.
The Approach
Research-Driven Design
Led multi-disciplinary research across clinical sites and FMI laboratories, developing oncologist personas and patient journey maps to inform every product decision.
Ethnographic Research
Deep dives at customer sites and laboratories, observing ordering workflows and accessioning processes end-to-end
Oncologist Personas
Developed research-backed archetypes mapping how different physician profiles order tests and interpret genomic reports
Design Sprints
Led modified sprints for cross-functional alignment on features, from theme exploration through solution sketching and prioritization
User Testing
Moderated studies with oncologists and lab technicians, validating report designs and platform usability before release
